"Edge Energy has installed solar power system on three houses that I own. In each case, they did an outstanding job. Their crew is experienced and work very hard. They were very careful with my property and involved me in decision making when options were available. If you want the best, go with Edge Energy and SunPower."

"We are very pleased with the energy audit that Home Energy Medics performed on our townhouse. We explained the humidity issues we have in our house to the tech, Luke, and he quickly went to work looking for the cause and explaining what he was finding along the way. Luke spent several house going through the entire house and when the audit was completed he gave us his preliminary review and scheduled a follow-up zoom call to discuss his formal findings. It was very professional and yet friendly and we wonder why we didn't call Home Energy Medics earlier."

"<br /> <p>After speaking with the Home Energy Detective, I hired them to do an energy audit. The results were pretty surprising even for me. The old, sheet metal ductwork was really leaky, and I had already seen that it wasn't sealed at all by the original builder. There was also a lot of heat coming from the attic door (no surprise here). <br /> They presented different ideas about ways to better insulate the home and about sealing gaps. As we went through the house during the blower-door test, which blows air out of the home and allows air to enter, the auditor showed me areas with heavy airflow using a smoke pen and an infra-red camera (very cool!). So, I could see the hot spots and feel and see how much air was leaking from the walls and from the sheet metal ductwork.</p> <p>The auditor told me the details about a process called Aeroseal to seal the ducts from inside. I had already heard of this process years ago. Given the that the former owner had already installed extra insulation in the attic, I decided to have the duct sealing and cleaning done and have an attic hatch installed.<br /> The guys came and cleaned the ducts and then sealed them up. They are able to measure the airflow as the ducts are coated, and it dropped from about 28-29% to around 6-7%. <br /> As we went through that hot summer, the temperature imbalance mostly disappeared. It was really amazing, and the electric bills never got above $150, and that's considering everything is electric. Also, the indoor air quality improved dramatically since the ducts were'nt sucking stuff in from the wall cavities. Seems we have to dust with much less frequency.<br /> Before having the audit, I had thought that I might need a second system for the upstairs, but now NOT the case. I could have spent $5,000 or $6,000 on a new system when I didn't need it. The duct cleaning and sealing was about 30-40% the cost of a system, and it solved the issue.</p> Everyone involved was extremely knowledgeable, professional and on-time. The work quality was great and the crews cleaned up well. <br /> I'd highly recommend them. <br />"

"It could not have gone any smoother! I talked to Mr. Roberson on a Saturday and explained to him that I needed insulation in the attic of my almost 40 year old townhouse. Although the business is located in Silver Spring, MD, Mr. Roberson said that they do service DC, and Northern VA (Woodbridge) where I live. He asked me the approximate square footage of my attic and gave me a rough estimate of how much it would cost. I told him I would think about it and get back to him within a few days. I called back on Monday and said I would like his company to do the work for me. The work was scheduled for Wednesday morning at 11:00. At 10:00, I received a call while I was away from home saying that they were running ahead of schedule. I was only a few minutes away from my home so it worked out perfectly! When I got home about 15 minutes later, all of their supplies were set up in a tent so they wouldn't get wet and they were ready to go. Before starting the work, Mr. Roberson's son explained to me exactly what they would be doing and measured the square footage of my attic for the final cost of the job. Since it was 575 square feet rather than the 600 that I estimated, the actual cost to me was about $100 less than Mr. Roberson's estimated over the phone. Mr. Roberson's son and his two assistants then got to work. They covered all the flooring from the front door up to where the attic entrance is. They were fast and efficient and within two hours, they were done and cleaned up everything. They took before and after pictures for me and sent them to me with the bill via email. A perfect experience. Thanks so much!!!"

"They guys that showed up to do the audit seemed very knowlegable and spent most of the morning evaluating my whole HVAC system including the flow of air at each register,  They confirmed my suspicions that the duct work was not configured correctly, gave me a few explanations and recommendations, and said they would put it all in a report and send it to me in about two weeks.  I told them that was good because I wanted to get started fixing this problem right away.  If you have read any of the other reviews you can guess what happened next.  After numerous e-mails and phone calls, I finally got a report from them 9 weeks after the audit, after I asked for my money back.  It was a very disappointing one page report with a lot of numbers with no written explanations or recommendations, which is why to I needed to take more time off of work to have someone explain it to me.  The report gave each room it's own unique name such as the white room, but the comfort advisor did not know which room was which, so  the individual air flow readings were not too educational and that was more than half the report.  Although Minnick's started well, they really dropped the ball on the report and overall I felt taking people's money without giving them results in a reasonable time is not very professional.  I would not use them again. <br />"

"He came by, went through my house and gave me the site audit a few weeks later.  The only thing I was disappointed in was the price.  I contacted several local handymen who quoted me half the cost of what this company wanted to do.  My advice is that it is worth the money to have them come out and do the audit of your home, but look elsewhere if you don't want  to be overcharged. <br />"

"Mr Kapoor is a highly-trained professional in his field (architecture and engineering) with decades of experience. When we decided between the quoted home inspections, his professional background prompted us to go with them. Although slightly more expensive than some others, we wouldn't hesitate to choose them again - after all, you are about to buy a property that could cost you dearly if not aware of existing issues! Mr. Kapoor was available within a few days from the initial phone call - another factor that many people may appreciate when time is of the essence. While carrying out our inspection, whenever Mr. Kapoor found something important, he explained these to us in detail. His findings were then available within 24 hours(!) in his pdf home inspection report. The report consisted of 34 pages, detailed with images, comments and definitions. Overall we would highly recommend this company - they are as good as it gets. Lastly, I feel obliged to mention that Carol (the lady who takes care of the administrative support and customer care) is one of the nicest persons I've ever had the fortune to liaise with. Thank you for taking good care of us:)"

FAQs for home energy audit projects in Washington DC, DC

To prepare for a home energy audit, begin by preparing your space. Clear any obstructions around the attic, basement, ducts, crawl space, appliances, windows, and doors. Gather all your energy bills from the last year and information on home upgrades if you’ve made any changes. If you’ve previously had an audit done, include that information as well.

Finally, be prepared to discuss any questions or concerns you have. If you’ve noticed a rise in your energy bills, hot or cold areas in your home, or unusual sounds from ducts or appliances, make a list to discuss with your auditor.

How often you should get an energy audit depends on the age and condition of your home. New homes with no issues are recommended to get an audit every five years, while older homes should audit every two to three years. If you’ve noticed any changes to your energy bills or other areas of concern, you should get an audit as soon as possible. It’s also a good idea to conduct an audit if you’ve made changes or upgrades to your home, such as installing a new furnace, windows, or doors.

An energy audit takes three to four hours to complete. Your auditor sets up testing equipment, conducts an exhaustive walk‑through inspection, and performs all required evaluations to identify energy loss points. The audit follows a systematic review that includes visual assessments, mechanical tests, and detailed documentation, resulting in a precise report of improvement recommendations.

You can schedule a home energy audit any time of the year—it all depends on what's convenient for you. That said, timing it right can help you tackle issues before they impact your comfort and bills. If you live in a colder climate and want to avoid high heating costs in the winter, getting an audit in the summer allows you to make improvements before the temperature drops. On the contrary, if hot summers are your concern, a spring audit can help you stay cool and save on air conditioning.

To find a qualified home energy auditor, start by searching for local energy auditors with great reviews and recognized certifications like those from the Building Performance Institute (BPI). These credentials ensure they're qualified and can help you qualify for rebates. Don't hesitate to ask about their audit methods and schedule a consultation to see if they're a good fit for your needs. Doing some research upfront helps you get top-notch service and maximize your energy efficiency.

Once you have your energy audit report, it's time to take action. Review the recommendations and prioritize the upgrades that make the most sense for your home and budget. Reach out to experienced pros to get quotes and discuss how they can help. By making these improvements, you'll boost your home's energy efficiency, lower your utility bills, and enjoy a more comfortable living space.
