"I couldn't be happier with the work done by Edge Energy and its partners! When Henry came out to do the audit, he was professional, courteous and so witty. Then came the work. They installed a high-efficiency fan in my bathroom which is very quiet and looks very nice. In these trying times, the installer was outfitted for both of our protections. Then came the insulation. 17" of insulation in my attic and sealed up all of the places where cold air was coming in. They also installed a cover to the attic stairs with a zipper opening should we ever need access. They rerouted the venting in my bathroom fans and installed insulation in my basement. I know this will have a HUGE impact on my energy bills. Sarah May at Edge was wonderful in answering all of my questions and concerns. I highly recommend them and in fact have done so to my neighbors and friends."

"Founders Insulation has been the best company I've worked with for this type of project. Brian and his team were professional, efficient, and reasonably priced—especially compared to other quotes I received. I could already notice a difference in my house after the installation was complete. I strongly recommend them to anyone looking to insulate their home or business. You will not be disaapointed. Brian is very kind and easy to work with. I will use their painting and drywall services in the future for my home. Thank you so much for the great work."

"Very well. The company sent someone quickly, assessed the work to be done to address the home sale inspection contingencies. They scheduled the work in a timely manner and altered the original schedule to accommodate the work load. They were responsive, and Renny, the technician, was knowledgeable and extremely pleasant to work with. Renny thought through issues and problems and solved them. He was extremely cheerful and upbeat. Repairs to sell a home are stressful and Renny's attitude really lightened the experience! The work was done professionally and completely."

"I am a returning customer to H&F Service. Betty and Mike are kind, courteous, professional, knowledgeable and rather accommodating. As busy as they are, I have never had to wait more than one day before Mike comes out to the house. This time it was during the Christmas holidays. We called for the fall/winter service and after checking out outdoor heat pump, Mike showed us that we need new fan blades because they were not spinning evenly due to being chipped and broken. The heat pump sits underneath a window awning and apparently over the years, winter ice dropping from the awnings damaged the blades. We also discovered that the fan motor needed to be replaced. He went to get the parts and quickly returned to do the repairs. He completed the system check-up and repairs in a couple of hours counting time to go and come back with the parts. Mike is always courteous and takes to explain the problem and what to do to prevent issues. Because we have been pleased with H&F since we first discovered them on Angie's List many years ago, we also use them for servicing our other home and will continue to do so. Sincerely, very please customers!"

FAQs for home energy audit projects in Washington, DC

To prepare for a home energy audit, begin by preparing your space. Clear any obstructions around the attic, basement, ducts, crawl space, appliances, windows, and doors. Gather all your energy bills from the last year and information on home upgrades if you’ve made any changes. If you’ve previously had an audit done, include that information as well.

Finally, be prepared to discuss any questions or concerns you have. If you’ve noticed a rise in your energy bills, hot or cold areas in your home, or unusual sounds from ducts or appliances, make a list to discuss with your auditor.

How often you should get an energy audit depends on the age and condition of your home. New homes with no issues are recommended to get an audit every five years, while older homes should audit every two to three years. If you’ve noticed any changes to your energy bills or other areas of concern, you should get an audit as soon as possible. It’s also a good idea to conduct an audit if you’ve made changes or upgrades to your home, such as installing a new furnace, windows, or doors.

An energy audit takes three to four hours to complete. Your auditor sets up testing equipment, conducts an exhaustive walk‑through inspection, and performs all required evaluations to identify energy loss points. The audit follows a systematic review that includes visual assessments, mechanical tests, and detailed documentation, resulting in a precise report of improvement recommendations.

You can schedule a home energy audit any time of the year—it all depends on what's convenient for you. That said, timing it right can help you tackle issues before they impact your comfort and bills. If you live in a colder climate and want to avoid high heating costs in the winter, getting an audit in the summer allows you to make improvements before the temperature drops. On the contrary, if hot summers are your concern, a spring audit can help you stay cool and save on air conditioning.

To find a qualified home energy auditor, start by searching for local energy auditors with great reviews and recognized certifications like those from the Building Performance Institute (BPI). These credentials ensure they're qualified and can help you qualify for rebates. Don't hesitate to ask about their audit methods and schedule a consultation to see if they're a good fit for your needs. Doing some research upfront helps you get top-notch service and maximize your energy efficiency.

Once you have your energy audit report, it's time to take action. Review the recommendations and prioritize the upgrades that make the most sense for your home and budget. Reach out to experienced pros to get quotes and discuss how they can help. By making these improvements, you'll boost your home's energy efficiency, lower your utility bills, and enjoy a more comfortable living space.
