"Upon experiencing deficiencies in the cooling of my home over the summer, I had my heat pump inspected by a local HVAC service. They were contracted through my home warranty plan and I do not recall the company name. I was told that the system had just become "too old" and was not repairable. I began the process of soliciting quotes for replacement. I called a local "big" company who I won't name, but is well known through their TV advertising and locally flavored name. They sent out a representative who briefly opened the door to my crawlspace, then viewed and photographed my air handler without stepping inside. From this I received a quote for a brand new heat pump system. Two days later I called Automatic Climate Control to ask for a quote for comparison. Michael Snipes came out the next day, opened the door to the crawlspace and immediately saw a section of ductwork collapsed on the ground and broken open. He then entered the crawlspace and spent about 20-30 minutes evaluating the situation. He provided me with quotes to replace the system, but not before explaining to me that much of my cooling problems were due to the collapsed and open duct work. Inside that ductwork was considerable mold and other biohazards, which he had photographed and showed me. He suggested to me that I open a service request to have the system looked at again, even if I chose to have another company do this, before I decide to replace it. I did make a call for service that afternoon, and I requested Automatic Climate Control through my home warranty contract. Their technician came out the next day, found the duct work broken in three places and losing 80% of the conditioned air into the crawlspace. He also found that the blower motor was faulty and needed replacement. I had Automatic Climate Control replace the blower motor which was covered under warranty. I also had them replace the main trunk of duct work which had collapsed and was biologically contaminated, and clean my remaining duct work. This was all done promptly in a single day. I am happy to say that my home is cooler and cleaner smelling than it has been in years, thanks to Michael and ACC. They chose to do right by me and not just offer to replace a system at considerable cost, which I didn't need. I will look to them for all of my service needs in the future, and when it comes time to actually replace my aging heat pump, Automatic Climate Control will be doing the installation. They saved this customer thousands of dollars instead of selfishly lining their own pockets. Thank you so much!"

"Robert from Goodman Plumbing and Heating was very attentive, and very informative.  He took several measurements, and discussed the options I had for the Mitsubishi system.  We discussed all the particulars for the design, the install, and the workings of the system.  Of all the interviews, Robert was the best.  In my home, I was going from 'no heating and air system' to having something that would work perfectly in a home with no duct system.
The Goodman installers, Matt and Jeff, arrived on time and went right to work.  They informed me of each step they were taking, installed the system, and cleaned up afterward.  Robert arrived during the install and made sure everything was going well.  Matt was very helpful explaining the remote control and how to work the system.  I was very pleased with everything and I will use Goodman Plumbing and Heating in the future.

"I came home in early April to find a burst pipe in my ceiling that had been pouring water for hours, the entire downstairs was flooded, and the celings in almost all rooms were pouring water, including my ceiling fan onto my bed, an inch of water on my vinyl flooring pouring into floor vents, carpets soaked. You can imagine my horror. I was in a hotel for 2 months during which the entire downstairs flooring (carpet, etc) had to be ripped up, and most of the ceiling replaced, ducts in crawlspace had to be replaced and entire ducting under house cleaned. This was not a good time in my life and was very stressed/depressed. That was all covered by insurance. In the meantime, my old heat pump had been sick, and had totally given out, leaking all refrigerant at the exchanger in crawlspace. This was not covered by insurance, just bad timing. I called Atlantic and Jason came out about 2 hours later, and he spent about an hour with me going all around. I was very impressed, and told him on the spot he had my business. I'm the type of person that can look a person in the eye and judge whether they care or not (we've all been there with contractors right?), and we sealed the deal on a handshake. Rode by the next day, finalized the purchase/installation. Jason was working overtime that evening as there was an $800 rebate from Lennox that ran out that day, and he had paperwork all over getting myself and everyone else in the system to get that rebate (and yes, Lennox sent me a check:) They actually got over to the house a day earlier than promised, and I sat in fear all day at work, as we all are used to getting that call "ummm, we can’t do this, we have a problem, etc.). Not a single call. Drove home excited to check out my new unit, and it was all done, cleaned up nicely, up and running. They did everything they said they would do, and it's working fantastic. Expensive? Yes. However, with the energystar $1500 rebate, and money saved over the year using the inline filter as opposed to buying filters, nice. Worth it, added value to home, my power bill is way down, and added value to home (I had it re-financed at the same time, and included the new unit, definetlly helped). They also do serviceing and have me in database, looking forward to the first service call, I'm sure it'll be up to par with what I've seen so far. I'm sure we've all dealt with different HVAC companies over the years, and this was my best experience."

FAQs for home energy audit projects in Colonial Heights, VA

To prepare for a home energy audit, begin by preparing your space. Clear any obstructions around the attic, basement, ducts, crawl space, appliances, windows, and doors. Gather all your energy bills from the last year and information on home upgrades if you’ve made any changes. If you’ve previously had an audit done, include that information as well.

Finally, be prepared to discuss any questions or concerns you have. If you’ve noticed a rise in your energy bills, hot or cold areas in your home, or unusual sounds from ducts or appliances, make a list to discuss with your auditor.

How often you should get an energy audit depends on the age and condition of your home. New homes with no issues are recommended to get an audit every five years, while older homes should audit every two to three years. If you’ve noticed any changes to your energy bills or other areas of concern, you should get an audit as soon as possible. It’s also a good idea to conduct an audit if you’ve made changes or upgrades to your home, such as installing a new furnace, windows, or doors.

An energy audit takes three to four hours to complete. Your auditor sets up testing equipment, conducts an exhaustive walk‑through inspection, and performs all required evaluations to identify energy loss points. The audit follows a systematic review that includes visual assessments, mechanical tests, and detailed documentation, resulting in a precise report of improvement recommendations.

You can schedule a home energy audit any time of the year—it all depends on what's convenient for you. That said, timing it right can help you tackle issues before they impact your comfort and bills. If you live in a colder climate and want to avoid high heating costs in the winter, getting an audit in the summer allows you to make improvements before the temperature drops. On the contrary, if hot summers are your concern, a spring audit can help you stay cool and save on air conditioning.

To find a qualified home energy auditor, start by searching for local energy auditors with great reviews and recognized certifications like those from the Building Performance Institute (BPI). These credentials ensure they're qualified and can help you qualify for rebates. Don't hesitate to ask about their audit methods and schedule a consultation to see if they're a good fit for your needs. Doing some research upfront helps you get top-notch service and maximize your energy efficiency.

Once you have your energy audit report, it's time to take action. Review the recommendations and prioritize the upgrades that make the most sense for your home and budget. Reach out to experienced pros to get quotes and discuss how they can help. By making these improvements, you'll boost your home's energy efficiency, lower your utility bills, and enjoy a more comfortable living space.
