"I went through like 3 other chimney groups including Chimney Sweep Masters and they all gave me conflicting information. Emerald City Chimney on the other hand was honest and thoroughly dismantled all the b******* the others tried to sell me. That’s what happens when you actual experienced workers take the lead instead of salespeople. It took a while to figure out exactly what the best approach would be, but in the end I got a job done for like $650 when the others wanted like $3000. I bought a custom fit chimney cap myself for like $200 I think and then had emerald city retrofit and install it for $450."

"After interviewing three contractors, I chose Ryan (owner of J&R) because we had a good rapport, he offered the best suggestions on project specifics, and he was willing to negotiate price (some) and payment schedule. He and his team (Reese, Jake, Andrew) were quite knowledgeable and professional, and open to my questions and requests. Ryan let me purchase additional yards of soil beyond what was needed for the project, at his cost, and had his guys spread it for me - very nice. Once the project was done, I discovered a few loose ends, and they were quick to come back and take care of them. The finished retaining wall and leveled yard look great, although I'm not thrilled with the steps (see below). Overall, a good experience, and I would probably hire J&R again or recommend them to others. That said, there were a few bumps along the way, some of which are normal for a construction project but others seemed avoidable. - The project estimate was 8-10 days but ran into a third week. One problem was they didn't reserve the equipment they needed to get started, which caused a 3-day delay. But even when all the equipment and materials were there, they worked short days. The first week, very little got done, nobody was there more than a couple hours a day. The second week, they only worked 3-5 hours a day - until the end of the week, when the project should be complete, but was only half done, so they started working more. But not once was there an 8-hour day. The project would have been completed sooner with more productive days. As a project manager myself, I found this annoying, esp. when the extra days impacted my personal life and business. - They didn't talk to me about how the stairs would be laid down the hillside, and I'm not pleased with the result. Not what I expected, and I hope I don't scrape my legs or trip down them. My older, existing stairs at the other end of the wall may not look as nice but are more functional than the new, $1000 steps. - The finish and cleanup was incomplete. They didn't properly finish the end of the wall (capstones), they dumped green waste and leftover gravel in inappropriate locations, and they left part of my lawn (their staging area) a mess - gravel and debris, damaged areas. This necessitated a return visit the following week to address these issues, which were then completed to my satisfaction."

"We had Russ and Hunter come out to replace our wood burning fireplace with a gas insert and run a new gas line for said fireplace. They went so far above our expectations I wish I could give a higher rating. The install was painless on our part and they even removed an old non-working humidifier and replaced a worn out pipe in the garage for us in the process. You cannot go wrong hiring Eagle and Sons HVAC, they go above and beyond expectations. Also, the new fireplace is incredible!"

"Two techs arrived on-time. The work was done quickly and efficiently. They explained what they were doing and the cost. It was a very tidy job. All the ash was gone from the fireplaces and not a spot in the house. The Company also recommended that I should have chimney caps installed, which I will be calling them back for."

They consulted with me whenever they had a question or to clarify something to make sure it was exactly how I wanted it. "We have a new construction home that we "finished" in July of last year.  We had numerous problems during the build, so to save some money on overrunning budgets my husband and I decided to install the stone veneer ourselves both inside and outside the house.  This included all the exterior wainscoting, four columns on the porch, and two floor-to-ceiling interior fireplaces.  We started off well, but after finishing over half the work we (quite frankly) ran out of steam!  With four large exterior columns and a very tall fireplace (15 feet) remaining, we called Jake at Stern's Masonry in January based on the excellent recommendations here on Angie's List.

Jake called back very quickly and came out to provide a quote within a few days.  He was very professional, recognized how much work we had already done, and was conscientious to the fact that the new work needed to blend with the old (ours...not so professional!) as much as possible.  We received his quote back with 24 hours, and while we felt the quoted price was reasonable, we unfortunately couldn't afford to get started until we'd saved up for a bit.  Jake was very understanding and said "give me a call when you're ready".  So in mid-March, we were happy to call him back for the job.  Although the company was working other jobs, they fit us in and his installer (Tony) got started a couple of weeks later.

Over the course of about two weeks, Tony and Jake smoothed the basecoats we had started, installed the veneer on four outside columns, put on stone caps to the top of the columns, demo'd our "half job" on the 15-foot tall interior fireplace, and reinstalled the veneer and hearthstones on the fireplace.  They had the skills (and scaffolding!) to get it done well.  Throughout the work, both Tony and Jake were respectful to our house and cleaned up after each day of work to limit the impact.  Jake also made sure that the work we had already done looked good before he was finished.  He cleaned the exterior veneer we had already installed to make sure the colors matched up, did some professional patching around cutouts like the hose bib and exterior outlets that we weren't that skilled to do, "straightened" a few of our more problem stones, touched up the paint on our firebox when it was needed, and even used a little leftover mortar to patch some holes he noticed in our driveway (the result of one of our many "problems" during build).

So here's our recommendation:  call Stern's.  And if you need to save up the money first, do it!  Worth. Every. Penny.

"We hired All About Masonry to tuck point 2 sides of our 1928 brick Tudor house and rebuild the chimney. We are very pleased with the quality of the work and the professionalism of the company. Larry (the owner) is a very good communicator, both in person and over email. His crew is friendly and respectful. They showed up and did the work when they said they would; they cleaned up well afterwards. We found the cost to be very fair, given the work. I have no hesitation recommending them, and we will hire All About Masonry again to tuck point the other 2 sides."

"Our initial call was answered the same day and soon after we had the visit and estimate.  They arrived and got right to work today.  They worked steadily and explained everything to us.  They cleaned up the area and in the walk through at the end, found that the builder 38 years ago failed to connect one of the cold air returns.  We are scheduling with Phoenix to come out at a later date to correct the  38 year old error. We are delighted.  Besides being extremely professional both men were also pleasant and personable.  We have absolutely no reservations in recommending Phoenix."

"The rep showed up a little late but it only took him a little over an hour to get the work done. I only called them because it was a new house. He basically scrubbed out the upper flu of both fire places and vacuumed them out. I don't know if it was worth 200 bucks but I don't have any complaints."

"I received a same-afternoon reply to my first contact with Sound Tile and Grout, and communication was always clear. Although they were booked out a few weeks, the regrouting job was professionally completed, and the technician went above and beyond by also touching up the grout on the backsplash so it all looks consistent and new. Tim was very neat, tidy, efficient and clearly knew what he was doing. Would recommend to anyone needing grout work."

A chimney liner lasts between 15 and 25 years, depending on the material. Aluminum liners last about five years, while cast-in-place liners can last up to 50 years. Regular professional inspections can reveal signs of deterioration, such as cracking or crumbling chimney walls, ensuring necessary repairs are made to maintain structural safety and efficiency.

Yes, a chimney liner is essential. It prevents dangerous heat and toxic gases from reaching surrounding materials, reducing fire risks and structural damage. A well-installed liner safeguards your masonry, directs harmful emissions outside, and enhances heating efficiency. Regular inspections and cleaning maintain your chimney liner’s performance, keeping your home secure and energy-efficient.
