"Bridgetown was prompt in coming out for the estimate, and when I agreed to have them do the work, they were out within a week to do the work. They were conscientious about cleaning up after themselves (grinding mortar creates a huge dusty mess). And, when it was discovered that the mortar in one section of the wall was solid and didn't need to be replaced, they told me that, and lowered the price by $500. They did such a good job that several of my neighbors in the condo assoc. asked them to do repair work too."

"They were friendly, efficient and did a fantastic job on replacing/repairing our aging chimney. They replaced the flashing which was previously installed incorrectly. The new chimney cover works great and keeps the birds out. Excellent job on the clean up as well. Highly recommended."

"Showed up at 9:40 for 9:40 appointment. Job took 30 min. 2 workers. Nathan answered all my questions about the job and related fireplace issues. Happy to report that he stated when he didn't know the answer in depth, but suggested what may be the source of effects. The job was done quickly, professionally and cleanly. Quoted a list of optional improvements (chimney cap, brick cleaning/seal) and repairs (cement flue cap replacement) that should be considered, but that they not a limitation to safe usage of the fireplace. I would hire again."

"Beautifully! Greg researched and secured 100-year-old brick for the walk, as my home and garden are old and eclectic. He found a terrific batch and, working around weather delays, completed the project quickly and efficiently."

"

All went well.  Mike arrived on time and began in the fireplace.  He cleaned the firebox, and connected a vacuum to the chimney to remove the soot from the interior.  He prepared the space well, securing the vacuum and using a drop cloth on the hearth and nearby carpet.  No dust or debris was left and we didn't need to move any furniture.  Mike also inspected the exterior of the chimney, from the ground and from the roof.  He took photos of some damage to the cap and of moss that cant be seen from the ground. He recommended areas that may need attention, and suggested things to better maintain our fireplace and get more years out of it.

We will definitely call them again for any chimney work.

"My kitchen was a mouldering mess, and it was time to bring it into the 21st century. My first stop was Sunset, where there was a great selection to choose from. They offered full service including demolition (but my contractors got their first and removed the 1960s formica). I chose the perfect quartz for my job, and Sunset did a great job of fitting the counters and installation, including setting me up with plumbers for faucet connection. I would use them again if I ever have a need for new counters."

"A fireplace inspection from another company advised that the cracks in two fireplaces in our 1965 home were so significant it rendered them unusable until repaired, and we needed chimney liners. I obtained additional inspections & bids from 3 companies including VCM. I knew I needed a professional mason due to the size and location of the cracks. Greg walked me through what needed to be done to make both fireplaces safe to use again which gave me confidence in his pricing, scope and quality of repair (his 30 years of experience was evident). The cost was very reasonable, and significantly lower than the other two bids. He also worked this job into his busy schedule because we had a renter moving into this property very soon. The quality of his work was excellent. I highly recommend this company."

"Called on on 12/20, was able to come by on 12/21 at 10am. Jason was polite and careful of fireplace soot. Laid out drop cloth and did not leave messes. Cleaned out chimney, and inspected mortar. Gave estimate for repairs for spring. Did not push services, did not pressure to have repairs done asap. I know my chimney looks bad with mortar falling out, he said will last couple more years, but fix sooner than later, suggested waiting for better weather so cost would be less. Seemed to be knowledgeable, trustworthy and not hard sell of services."

FAQs for brick or stone fireplace installation projects in Portland, OR

A chimney liner lasts between 15 and 25 years, depending on the material. Aluminum liners last about five years, while cast-in-place liners can last up to 50 years. Regular professional inspections can reveal signs of deterioration, such as cracking or crumbling chimney walls, ensuring necessary repairs are made to maintain structural safety and efficiency.

Yes, a chimney liner is essential. It prevents dangerous heat and toxic gases from reaching surrounding materials, reducing fire risks and structural damage. A well-installed liner safeguards your masonry, directs harmful emissions outside, and enhances heating efficiency. Regular inspections and cleaning maintain your chimney liner’s performance, keeping your home secure and energy-efficient.

Creosote buildup occurs when burning wood releases tar that adheres to the chimney liner, posing a fire hazard. Regular professional chimney inspections and cleanings by qualified chimney sweeps will effectively manage creosote deposits, preventing dangerous conditions and costly repairs. Maintaining a clean chimney liner is essential for long-term performance and safety.
