"Tim replaced an obsolete and unusually complicated Schlage handleset.  When I called 3 different locksmiths to ask about tackling the problem Tim was the only one who gave me confidence over the phone that he could get it done.  The old lock had a large oval cut-out, and after extensive web search I had found a Baldwin model that would cover the large hole.  Job required modifying the cut-out by drilling out more.  He also cut out holes in a new door jamb for the deadbolt and handle strike.   On the day he was scheduled he called to update me on his arrival.  He got the project done in the time he estimated and we're very happy with the results.  A great service! <br />"

"<p>After being told by our locksmith of 12 years that our commercial combination lock and the heavy metal door is was installed in needed to be replaced, we contacted Lock Guard for a second opinion.</p> <p>Ben called right back, came right out and found that a major component (combo box) was not functioning and needed to be replaced.  He made the repairs and all is working great.  Would recommend him to anyone!  Thanks Angie's List.</p> <br />"

"Dean from A Dave's called, as scheduled, the afternoon of the service and came to our house shortly after. He listened to my concerns, explained his recommendations, and went ahead with the installation. He replaced four existing deadbolts with incredible heavy-duty locks. He explained their operation and safety features, and took lots of time to talk to us and explain what he was doing. The deadbolts work like a charm. He cleaned up after the install. Overall, he did a great job and I will use A Dave's again for any locksmithing."

FAQs for locksmith service projects in Minneapolis, MN

The installation timeframe varies based on door preparation and lock complexity. For doors already prepared with appropriate holes, installation might take 15 to 30 minutes. New installations requiring drilling take one to two hours. First-time DIY installers should allocate additional time to ensure proper alignment and function. Professional locksmiths complete standard installations efficiently due to their specialized tools and experience.

Most residential doors can accommodate deadbolts, but certain door types present challenges. Solid wood and fiberglass doors accept standard deadbolt hardware, while metal doors require specialized drilling equipment. Hollow-core interior doors lack the structural integrity to properly support deadbolts without additional reinforcement. Doors should be at least 1⅜ inches thick to properly house standard deadbolt mechanisms.

Door warranties remain valid when deadbolts are installed according to the manufacturer's guidelines. However, improper installation that damages the door structure might affect warranty coverage.

Before modifying any door under warranty, review the documentation for specific limitations or requirements regarding hardware installation. Some manufacturers provide templates or guidelines for acceptable lock placement to maintain warranty protection.

Rekeying offers a more economical alternative to complete replacement when you need to change access, but the lock mechanism remains in good condition. This process involves reconfiguring the internal pins to work with a new key while retaining the existing hardware. For homeowners with multiple locks, rekeying provides the convenience of using a single key for all entry points while maintaining security.
