"Jon answered his phone when I called, and showed up a few minutes early for the appointment. He was courteous and professional. I would use him again, and recommend him to anyone looking for a locksmith in Rhode Island."

"<p>From the first contact I found Dave Smith to be a great person to deal with. He took the time to understand my needs and to explain the various options that I should consider including giving me an "education" on security upgrades that I had in mind. On the day of the installation he arrived on time and completed the work in a reasonable amount of time. The work was done professionally, neatly and the work area was thoroughly cleaned up when he was done. </p> <p>I am very particular about contractors working on my house, and in this case I was very satisfied with the result. I would recommend this company, without any hesitation, to anyone needing locksmith services.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>S King</p> <p><br /></p> <p><br /></p> <p><br /></p> <p><br /></p> <br />"

"Very knowledgeable staff! We bought a new house and wanted the locks changed. They initially came out and changed the tumblers in the existing locks and gave us five new keys. We then wanted to switch to a more advanced lock. They gave us many options and explained the difference between the various locks they install. They came back out a few days later to switch the locks to something more advanced for us. On the first trip they did not have all the parts they needed and they had to return to finish the job. But we would still use them again because both times they were punctual, polite and very efficient. We weren't home when they completed the job and they called me to say they were done. I panicked because I hadn't left a check for them but they said that wasn't a problem and I called them later with a credit card number over the phone."

"Wonderfully. I called 3 other Angie's-List-recommended locksmiths before I called The Lock Shop. Their phones all went to voicemail. Jeff answered the phone on one ring. He explained how he prices the job, answered my questions, and sent David two days later. David called me with an estimated arrival time. He was professional, personable, and did a wonderful (and immaculate) job."

FAQs for locksmith service projects in Providence, RI

The installation timeframe varies based on door preparation and lock complexity. For doors already prepared with appropriate holes, installation might take 15 to 30 minutes. New installations requiring drilling take one to two hours. First-time DIY installers should allocate additional time to ensure proper alignment and function. Professional locksmiths complete standard installations efficiently due to their specialized tools and experience.

Most residential doors can accommodate deadbolts, but certain door types present challenges. Solid wood and fiberglass doors accept standard deadbolt hardware, while metal doors require specialized drilling equipment. Hollow-core interior doors lack the structural integrity to properly support deadbolts without additional reinforcement. Doors should be at least 1⅜ inches thick to properly house standard deadbolt mechanisms.

Door warranties remain valid when deadbolts are installed according to the manufacturer's guidelines. However, improper installation that damages the door structure might affect warranty coverage.

Before modifying any door under warranty, review the documentation for specific limitations or requirements regarding hardware installation. Some manufacturers provide templates or guidelines for acceptable lock placement to maintain warranty protection.

Rekeying offers a more economical alternative to complete replacement when you need to change access, but the lock mechanism remains in good condition. This process involves reconfiguring the internal pins to work with a new key while retaining the existing hardware. For homeowners with multiple locks, rekeying provides the convenience of using a single key for all entry points while maintaining security.
