"Excellent job, excellent price. Another locksmith quoted over double the price just to come out and couldn't do it for a couple of days. This locksmith updated me with the time he would arrive and rearranged his schedule to accommodate my need for security that day. He also had an extra part for the lock that I hadn't purchased. Very impressed with this company and its service."

"Excellent all around. Instructions exactly as told. Got what wanted but found fault in original car key fob AND most importantly showed how to still get car running with failed key fob. An engineering fault not shown out in vital importance - otherwise considered car useless as could be stranded anywhere with NO help. Showed failsafe feature freely to still use car. Just excellent work."

"I phoned Fred's after locking myself out, owing to an automatic lock on the inside. The locksmith came promptly (I may have been lucky to find him just getting free), assessed the situation and forced the door open for me. He then explained what had happend, changed the lock and disabled the automatic clasp on the inside of the door. In addition, we assessed the safety of the other doors and he gave me advice on which locks to employ, when and how. It was quick and dirty, and not too expensive. Fred's is the best! <br />"

FAQs for locksmith service projects in Detroit, MI

The installation timeframe varies based on door preparation and lock complexity. For doors already prepared with appropriate holes, installation might take 15 to 30 minutes. New installations requiring drilling take one to two hours. First-time DIY installers should allocate additional time to ensure proper alignment and function. Professional locksmiths complete standard installations efficiently due to their specialized tools and experience.

Most residential doors can accommodate deadbolts, but certain door types present challenges. Solid wood and fiberglass doors accept standard deadbolt hardware, while metal doors require specialized drilling equipment. Hollow-core interior doors lack the structural integrity to properly support deadbolts without additional reinforcement. Doors should be at least 1⅜ inches thick to properly house standard deadbolt mechanisms.

Door warranties remain valid when deadbolts are installed according to the manufacturer's guidelines. However, improper installation that damages the door structure might affect warranty coverage.

Before modifying any door under warranty, review the documentation for specific limitations or requirements regarding hardware installation. Some manufacturers provide templates or guidelines for acceptable lock placement to maintain warranty protection.

Rekeying offers a more economical alternative to complete replacement when you need to change access, but the lock mechanism remains in good condition. This process involves reconfiguring the internal pins to work with a new key while retaining the existing hardware. For homeowners with multiple locks, rekeying provides the convenience of using a single key for all entry points while maintaining security.
