"I cannot say enough about A-1. They came out and saved our Christmas!!! We just moved in to our house and had all of our Christmas stuff in our garage--and were shocked by the door locking (we had no key!) I had little faith that I would find a locksmith on Christmas Eve. I called a dozen places that seemed kind of iffy. Even though they closed at 3 A-1 called me back at 4 and came out and got the old door opened. He was professional, prompt, quick to get the difficult job done and he was just genuinely a good person. If you need a locksmith A-1 is your best choice by far!!"

FAQs for locksmith service projects in Pittsburgh, PA

The installation timeframe varies based on door preparation and lock complexity. For doors already prepared with appropriate holes, installation might take 15 to 30 minutes. New installations requiring drilling take one to two hours. First-time DIY installers should allocate additional time to ensure proper alignment and function. Professional locksmiths complete standard installations efficiently due to their specialized tools and experience.

Most residential doors can accommodate deadbolts, but certain door types present challenges. Solid wood and fiberglass doors accept standard deadbolt hardware, while metal doors require specialized drilling equipment. Hollow-core interior doors lack the structural integrity to properly support deadbolts without additional reinforcement. Doors should be at least 1⅜ inches thick to properly house standard deadbolt mechanisms.

Door warranties remain valid when deadbolts are installed according to the manufacturer's guidelines. However, improper installation that damages the door structure might affect warranty coverage.

Before modifying any door under warranty, review the documentation for specific limitations or requirements regarding hardware installation. Some manufacturers provide templates or guidelines for acceptable lock placement to maintain warranty protection.

Rekeying offers a more economical alternative to complete replacement when you need to change access, but the lock mechanism remains in good condition. This process involves reconfiguring the internal pins to work with a new key while retaining the existing hardware. For homeowners with multiple locks, rekeying provides the convenience of using a single key for all entry points while maintaining security.
