"I'm a member of a church that was built in 1960 with practically no insulation, single pane windows, leaky doors. I wanted to improve our energy efficiency. Carl, from CDC, came out and met with me and a couple of other parishioners. He described his services, what he could do, how long it would take, what kind of things might be practical for our facility. As I am a graduate mechanical engineer with a MS in heat transfer and thermodynamics, everything he said make sense. He was not pushy or insistent. He understood that our church has a "procedure" to go through to approve financial commitients, and he said he was willing to come back again if needed to meet with the finance committee. We did not hire CDC, nor any company. As a result of discussions with other church members, I realized that no one was going to help me do the work and make the decisions that would be needed after CDC would give us their report, they expected that I would just do it all myself. That was more work that I was willing to do, so I stopped the project. The stoppage was in NO WAY due to CDC. In fact, CDC was my preferred contractor among the ones we interviewed, based on his knowledge and professional attitude"

"This was a terrific experience, worth the cost many times over. The home energy audit was performed in November 2023, was very detailed and took several hours, and was followed by a very detailed written report with specific recommendations. We had almost all of the recommendations done and a post-energy audit in June 2024 showed a large improvement in our home's energy efficiency. Doug was knowledgeable, thorough, patient in explaining everything including follow up questions that we had. We learned a lot and were very impressed."

"Job was done very professionally and on time. They even worked us in before the end of the year in order to get the incentives from DTE (gas & electricity supplier). Our gas & electric bills dropped about 10% every month throughout the following year. And they have not gone back up. I continue to reap the rewards of having a well sealed and insulated house. I would strongly recommend this firm to anyone looking for these services and other insulation work. I continue to be very pleased with them! <br />"

"The experience from start to finish was very smooth. Jonathan did the original analysis, which was very thorough and detailed. I knew I had significant heating loss going on, and his audit confirmed just how bad it was. The installation crew took extra care to protect my house. They were also very professional and got the job finished in one day, even though it was scheduled for two. After the job was done they cleaned everything up nicely, and also showed me pictures of all the completed work. Great job!"

"The electrician's arrived at the agreed time. They were both courteous and professional. They listened to my description of the issues - the lights in the garage and dining room would not turn on. Right away they started looking for the problem and found it quickly and easily. They even changed a light bulb on the porch to make certain that the light would come on and the issue was resolved. <br />"

"Property Facts provides a thorough and comprehensive inspection. Mike doesn't just look at things from arm's length, he really gets into the buildings and takes the client through the positives and negatives of their property. There were no deal-breakers in the property Mike inspected for me but even so, he provides a binder of items that need to be addressed for future reference and addition to the "honey do" list."

FAQs for home energy audit projects in Plymouth, MI

To prepare for a home energy audit, begin by preparing your space. Clear any obstructions around the attic, basement, ducts, crawl space, appliances, windows, and doors. Gather all your energy bills from the last year and information on home upgrades if you’ve made any changes. If you’ve previously had an audit done, include that information as well.

Finally, be prepared to discuss any questions or concerns you have. If you’ve noticed a rise in your energy bills, hot or cold areas in your home, or unusual sounds from ducts or appliances, make a list to discuss with your auditor.

How often you should get an energy audit depends on the age and condition of your home. New homes with no issues are recommended to get an audit every five years, while older homes should audit every two to three years. If you’ve noticed any changes to your energy bills or other areas of concern, you should get an audit as soon as possible. It’s also a good idea to conduct an audit if you’ve made changes or upgrades to your home, such as installing a new furnace, windows, or doors.

An energy audit takes three to four hours to complete. Your auditor sets up testing equipment, conducts an exhaustive walk‑through inspection, and performs all required evaluations to identify energy loss points. The audit follows a systematic review that includes visual assessments, mechanical tests, and detailed documentation, resulting in a precise report of improvement recommendations.

You can schedule a home energy audit any time of the year—it all depends on what's convenient for you. That said, timing it right can help you tackle issues before they impact your comfort and bills. If you live in a colder climate and want to avoid high heating costs in the winter, getting an audit in the summer allows you to make improvements before the temperature drops. On the contrary, if hot summers are your concern, a spring audit can help you stay cool and save on air conditioning.

To find a qualified home energy auditor, start by searching for local energy auditors with great reviews and recognized certifications like those from the Building Performance Institute (BPI). These credentials ensure they're qualified and can help you qualify for rebates. Don't hesitate to ask about their audit methods and schedule a consultation to see if they're a good fit for your needs. Doing some research upfront helps you get top-notch service and maximize your energy efficiency.

Once you have your energy audit report, it's time to take action. Review the recommendations and prioritize the upgrades that make the most sense for your home and budget. Reach out to experienced pros to get quotes and discuss how they can help. By making these improvements, you'll boost your home's energy efficiency, lower your utility bills, and enjoy a more comfortable living space.
