"Having the energy audit was a really great experience. We knew we had issues with air leakage but seeing them really lets you know what s happening. More surprising is the areas that are found to be leaking. We have a closet that causing major issues and we would have never known. We have improper insulation over a soffit area for a built in shelf area and that is causing a lot of cold in the upstairs too. We would have never known without the audit. We are excited to get the report so we can see exactly what is recommended to remedy all of our problem areas for a more efficient home."

"I started with an energy audit from Consumers Energy.  I was then referred to a list of companies to have a followup comprehensive energy audit and depending on the work that was done and the results proved by an additional comprehensive energy audit out to document improvements, I could earn rebates for the work I had done.  I had the misfortune of picking "Company X" to have the comprehensive audit in (the one done before the work)  Their prices were quite high and I felt extreme pressure to make a snap decision or they wouldn't give me their "best" price. I obtained better offers and went with one company for the furnace and another for the insulation. To qualify for the Consumers Energy rebates, I now needed an additional audit (audit out) to document the changes after the work was performed. "Company X" refused to perform the tests since I didn't use their company for the work. <br /> I was extremely fortunate to be referred to CDC Energy Consultants, Carl Clark, who performs independent energy analysis without being a salesman trying to sell you products.  He was also on Consumers Energy list of participating contractors. <br /> From the start, I knew I had chosen the right man.  He was courteous, professional, accomodating, and a great communicator. We corresponded several times prior to and after my appt. and every question I had was promptly answered and I was provided with information that was extremely valuable to me since I had no prior experience in these matters. He made me feel free to contact him at any time if I had questions or problems and he was very helpful.  On the day of my appt., he was prompt and had me accompany him through the house as he explained what he was doing and the test results and their ramifications.  This was particularly important since the insulation work had several problem areas.  He wrote a thorough report, well documented with photographs and all I had to do was contact the insulation co. I used, email their service manager the report, and I was contacted by them and had the service manager out to my home and arrange for another appt. to have all the problem areas corrected at no charge to me.  They even agreed to pay for repeat energy audit once the work was done.  Had I not had CDC Energy Consultants here, I would have been blind to these problems and would not have known what to tell the insulation company. <br /> I am now anticipating $1450.00  in rebates that CDC Energy Consultants applied for to Consumers Energy in my behalf. <br /> I feel like Carl Clark will be a lifelong friend after this experience. <br /> <br /> <br />"

"John and his team were very professional and did a great job. They added insulation to my attic and air sealed the entire home. They worked quickly and left the home as clean as it was before they arrived. I would strongly recommend John and his team for an energy audit and installing the recommended updates."

"Doug was awesome and probably saved our lives. As he entered our home his carbon monoxide detector went off. He went directly to our furnace and found a blocked exhaust duct. Next he found a small natural gas leak. Then he gave us 7 low cost items to improve the energy efficiency of our home. Having a professional inspect your home will pay you back in many ways. Thank you Doug!!"

"They gave me a good price on that. Their service was excellent. The kids were young, but they were very professional and knew what they were doing. The owner would follow-up right afterwards, call and check with me if I had any problems and he would show up at the house to make sure there were no problems. He still calls me on the system."

"<br /> <br />The sales rep called at our appointment time and said he was on his way.  It was a morning appointment so I don?t believe that there would have been any prior appointments that day, so that was mildly frustrating, but would not directly influence our decision.   <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> During presentation there were not samples available to gauge the quality and appearance up close instead of pictures.  That being said, the salesman seemed very knowledgeable and friendly.  Being an older house we were informed that the doors would have to be cut down to size which was extra costs.  Also, given the craftsman style we had wanted a fir grain to the fiberglass door, but that was an up-charge and was significant.  It is worth noting that their craftsman style door offered is a bit non-traditional <br /> <br />and has three panels instead of two.  The quote was written with an oak grain instead given the cost difference for upgrade to fir grain. <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />We ended up selecting a different company to go with based on their price and also the aesthetics and differences in quality. When I spoke to the salesperson and let him know our decision he asked if it was because of the price, because he could work with us on that.  Personally, that tactic is a turn-off.  I dont like to haggle and it implies that what was quoted was higher than it needed to be.  When I explained it was partially about price, but it also was the different door brand and aesthetics he asked that we decided on.  When I told him he immediately went into the ?I really don?t like to talk bad about others ? but??.  Another very big red flag for us, confirming that it was not a good match and that we had made the right choice to go with a competitor. <br /> <br /> <br />"

"It went very smoothly. Jamie came out to make sure they had all the measurement specifics for what needed to be made up ahead of time. Brad and Tom came to do the install 2 days later. They were clean cut, polite, respectful of my home, cleaned up after themselves, programmed my thermostat and even helped my get the energy credit paperwork completed!"

FAQs for home energy audit projects in Romulus, MI

To prepare for a home energy audit, begin by preparing your space. Clear any obstructions around the attic, basement, ducts, crawl space, appliances, windows, and doors. Gather all your energy bills from the last year and information on home upgrades if you’ve made any changes. If you’ve previously had an audit done, include that information as well.

Finally, be prepared to discuss any questions or concerns you have. If you’ve noticed a rise in your energy bills, hot or cold areas in your home, or unusual sounds from ducts or appliances, make a list to discuss with your auditor.

How often you should get an energy audit depends on the age and condition of your home. New homes with no issues are recommended to get an audit every five years, while older homes should audit every two to three years. If you’ve noticed any changes to your energy bills or other areas of concern, you should get an audit as soon as possible. It’s also a good idea to conduct an audit if you’ve made changes or upgrades to your home, such as installing a new furnace, windows, or doors.

An energy audit takes three to four hours to complete. Your auditor sets up testing equipment, conducts an exhaustive walk‑through inspection, and performs all required evaluations to identify energy loss points. The audit follows a systematic review that includes visual assessments, mechanical tests, and detailed documentation, resulting in a precise report of improvement recommendations.

You can schedule a home energy audit any time of the year—it all depends on what's convenient for you. That said, timing it right can help you tackle issues before they impact your comfort and bills. If you live in a colder climate and want to avoid high heating costs in the winter, getting an audit in the summer allows you to make improvements before the temperature drops. On the contrary, if hot summers are your concern, a spring audit can help you stay cool and save on air conditioning.

To find a qualified home energy auditor, start by searching for local energy auditors with great reviews and recognized certifications like those from the Building Performance Institute (BPI). These credentials ensure they're qualified and can help you qualify for rebates. Don't hesitate to ask about their audit methods and schedule a consultation to see if they're a good fit for your needs. Doing some research upfront helps you get top-notch service and maximize your energy efficiency.

Once you have your energy audit report, it's time to take action. Review the recommendations and prioritize the upgrades that make the most sense for your home and budget. Reach out to experienced pros to get quotes and discuss how they can help. By making these improvements, you'll boost your home's energy efficiency, lower your utility bills, and enjoy a more comfortable living space.
