"I lost my only key to the apartment and was out with screen door, deadbolt and doorknob locked :/ Nathan arrived after 15 minutes as promised, opened all three without damaging anything, got me inside in 10 minutes, and in no more than half an hour he had a new set of keys made."

"I had seen this company at work when my former landlord had our apartment building rekeyed. So when I moved into my own house, these were the guys I called to do the job. They arrived on time and called to let me know they were on their way. The locksmith took care of the rekeying in short order. My door wasn't locking properly, so he figured out the problem and fixed it for me at no extra charge. <br /> <br /> There was one problem in that the work order didn't include the garage door opener request. We figured the dispatcher forget to include it. But that was no problem. He took a look at my ancient Genie garage door opener (circa 1972) and checked the truck for a replacement. He didn't have one but arranged to come back the next day at a time that worked for me. It took a couple of tries but we found one and best part is that I didn't have to pay for a second house call. While it wasn't a perfect experience, having the field staff be able to make a call for a solution that is the best fit for the customer (that's me) makes me even happier with this company."

"Mike is amazing and if you need a locksmith, you can't go wrong with him.  He arrived right on time, having called first to let us know he was on the way and repaired our locks within a day of our original call.   He repaired three locks - one of which was the original 1942 front door lock!!!!  He explained everything he was doing and why he was doing it.  We trust him completely and recommend him highly!  Thanks for everything Mike, we appreciate you. <br />"

"The owner , Daneil,  of Lock Genius was out of town but sent an affiiate ( who didn't work directly with him) over right away to assess our issue with door handle that would not work. The owner, Daniel was the nicest and most hard-working person I have probably ever dealt with for service/maintenance issues with our property or home. His affiliate charged $74 to assess issue and I waited a couple weeks for a call back to hear about what parts had been ordered and for a replacement but when I did not hear back I called Daniel and he went to work on it right away - the part was hard to obtain and he called may people to try to find a part but when he could not he figured out a way to use another part to work instead saving us  quite a bit of $ (replacement of door handle would have been $500-600 but in the end parts and labor by Daniel were only $174 more.) He even took a look at some othr things in our loft unit we were concerned about unrelated to the door/lock.  He was always so eager to help , kind and responsive by phone. I woudl highly recommend Daniel to anyone! <br />"

"We just moved in to a house with four old school mortise locks with skeleton keys, but the keys were - of course - all missing. <br /> <br /> We removed two of these locks and took them to the Lock Works. They tried all of their stock keys and determined they were definitely custom keyed. They said it'd take 1 business day and cost $25-$30 to make 1 key for one of them. They also explained that the same key might fit in these two but might not. <br /> <br /> 1 business day later they called and reported the one key they made operated both locks. Lucky! <br /> <br /> The bill was a higher-than-estimated $40. Boo! <br /> <br /> When we got home we discovered that the two locks we'd left behind were keyed differently from the two we happened to take with us. We might go back to have key(s) made for those, as well."

FAQs for locksmith service projects in San Francisco, CA

The installation timeframe varies based on door preparation and lock complexity. For doors already prepared with appropriate holes, installation might take 15 to 30 minutes. New installations requiring drilling take one to two hours. First-time DIY installers should allocate additional time to ensure proper alignment and function. Professional locksmiths complete standard installations efficiently due to their specialized tools and experience.

Most residential doors can accommodate deadbolts, but certain door types present challenges. Solid wood and fiberglass doors accept standard deadbolt hardware, while metal doors require specialized drilling equipment. Hollow-core interior doors lack the structural integrity to properly support deadbolts without additional reinforcement. Doors should be at least 1⅜ inches thick to properly house standard deadbolt mechanisms.

Door warranties remain valid when deadbolts are installed according to the manufacturer's guidelines. However, improper installation that damages the door structure might affect warranty coverage.

Before modifying any door under warranty, review the documentation for specific limitations or requirements regarding hardware installation. Some manufacturers provide templates or guidelines for acceptable lock placement to maintain warranty protection.

Rekeying offers a more economical alternative to complete replacement when you need to change access, but the lock mechanism remains in good condition. This process involves reconfiguring the internal pins to work with a new key while retaining the existing hardware. For homeowners with multiple locks, rekeying provides the convenience of using a single key for all entry points while maintaining security.
