"Trevor was on time, courteous and very professional. He inspected the fireplace, damper, flue liner and chimney crown. He found several issues that need to be addressed and the structure was clean. He explained pricing and all the options, very pleased."

"One Call came and did a thorough review and estimated repair for brick and interior damage. They went a step further to help diagnose poor flashing/roof junction and suggested we’d continue to have water leaking if we didn’t repair that too. They were great about estimating everything separately so we could get comparison quotes. They were responsive and professional. Even helped advance workers out due to rain in the forecast."

"After purchasing the deal online late Sat 10/24/15 I received an email from the owner Jan telling me someone could perform the service Monday 10/26/15. I was pleased.  The technician arrived on Monday.  I will spare the technician the embarrassment of most of the details but I was told that I needed a new gas valve...it did not go well.  So much so that I called the owner to tell him we would not be doing business and that I would ask for a refund from Angie's list.  He politely asked for details since this technician was a new hire and that as a business owner it was important to him.  After my explanation he asked if he could please send another technician out the following morning free of charge as he wanted to make this right.  I agreed.  A gentleman named Greg arrived at 9:30 and was directed to my fireplace.  I told him to have at it as I would continue my housework and be within ear shot.  At 9:50 Greg called me into the room and said everything was ready to go explaining that a safety feature had been enabled.  I couldn't believe it!  I was quickly reminded how important it is to speak directly with a business owner in these situations.  So now, not only does Jan's company have my future business for my fireplace needs but also any plumbing needs or any services his business performs.  I was more than happy to cancel my refund request from Angie's list and write this honest and positive review instead!

"They came it and looked at my fire place cleaned it out.  Checked the inside and outside and seal the outside first.  They seal the outside and told me not to burn anything in my fire place until I had the fire place seal on the inside.  I plan to call them soon and have them seal the inside.

"

U S Shingle sent Ken Proia to tell us why our Chimney was leaking down the fireplace and in our basement. Ken and one of his crew climbed on the roof, took pictures and explained to me what the problem was. Ken gave us two options: A quick patch job and hope for the best or eliminate any possibility that it would leak again. We chose the latter option. Ken and his crew was punctual and polite. They answered all questions that I had during and after the repair. After the job was finished, they said we will not see the leak again but the work was guaranteed if we did. They cleaned up the work site after the job was finished.  Our roof looks a lot better from our new deck and we feel like our home is in better condition than it was.

"Can't say enough good things about McCoy and Calvary Climate. Veteran owned and local family man, he's a great guy, very considerate and respectful. I called 3 places for service when our air went out on Saturday before Memorial Day, and each place wanted $225-$300 for an "emergency" holiday call, just to show up, not including parts, labor or fixing the problem. McCoy showed up within 20 minutes of calling him and had our air fixed 10 minutes later. Total cost from Calvary Climate was less than just the service fee for showing up the other companies wanted. I'm getting him back out next week to clean and inspect the rest of my system before summer hits. Only a $69 fee you can't beat! If you are having issues, do your family a favor and call, you can thank me later. Even if you aren't having issues now, the $69 fee is well worth the money to have him clean the coils, check all the capacitors, other system parts and the drainage. He won't lie or try to sell you anything you don't need, but he may find something that might become an issue and leave you without AC. Better to stay ahead of possible issues and replace things on your time frame rather than wake up hot and have no choice."

"Opted to use another company for the roofing work.  The person who came to give me an estimate was nice, polite, prompt, and professional.  However, the company provided an estimate to replace my roof without ever even looking at the roof in person, other than from the ground level.  No one ever got on my roof or took measurements to calculate the estimate.  While it may be possible to obtain a rough estimate from satellite photos, there is no way to determine the extent of any damage to a roof without actually climbing up onto the roof and doing a visual inspection."

FAQs for brick or stone fireplace repair projects in Birmingham, AL

Permit requirements for fireplace insert removal vary by location and project scope. While removing an electric insert rarely requires permits, gas insert removals often do because they involve modifications to gas lines. Some municipalities also require permits for changes to structural elements or venting systems. Check with your local building department before beginning your project. Professional fireplace services typically handle permit acquisition as part of their package.

Removing a fireplace insert can potentially impact your home's value. Since fireplaces are desirable features in many housing markets, removing an insert (especially if it eliminates the fireplace's functionality) might negatively affect your property value. If you're planning to sell your home soon, consider keeping the fireplace intact. For homeowners planning to stay long-term, the potential energy efficiency gains from removing an inefficient fireplace might outweigh future resale considerations.

The time required to remove a fireplace insert depends on several factors, including the type of insert, its installation complexity, and whether structural modifications are needed. Professional removal services can typically complete the job in a single day, though complex situations involving gas lines, electrical work, or structural changes may require additional time. Your removal specialist should provide a time estimate based on your specific situation.

Many fireplace inserts contain recyclable materials, particularly metal components that can be processed at scrap facilities. Working inserts in good condition, especially wood-burning models, might have resale value. Before disposal, consider checking with recycling centers, architectural salvage shops, or online marketplaces to explore options for giving your old insert a second life. This approach can be both environmentally responsible and potentially offset some of your removal costs.
