"Stellar service! The two young gentlemen who cleaned the chimney could not have been any nicer or more professional. They did a thorough job from the inside and then proceeded up to the roof. It turns out that we need some major work done (flue replacement, brick work, new cap). This is a result of the age of our house and the earthquake this past year. What set these fellows apart from anyone we have worked with before was the videos they showed us which clearly indicated the damage that needed to be repaired. They had multiple shots of the different areas and were most patient in explaining in great detail what needed to be done and why. We could not think of a better company to do the work than American Professional Chimney and Masonry.Specialists. They ARE the ultimate professionals and specialists! Having nothing to do with chimney cleaning but showing you what kind of gentlemen they were: they knocked on the front door after going outside to go up on the roof and asked if we had a wire coat hanger. The UPS driver making a delivery next door had locked his keys in the truck and they wanted to help him out. You could not ask for better proof of character!"

Customers say: True professional

"Repair went pretty much as planned, although it ended up being a much bigger job due to a cracked liner inside the chimney. The owner/boss of the operation is hard-working, conscientious, friendly, and straightforward. My minor gripe, the B for quality, is not a criticism of the boss, but more his workers, who left things messy and somewhat unfinished. It seemed like they wouldn't do a good job unless he was there to point out the shortfalls.  As long as you're willing to speak up when things aren't right, I am confident that the firm will do whatever is needed. I am very happy, and would use them again.

"From start to finish I was very satisfied with everything Chimney.com did to fix my fireplace issues. I had so many challenging demands including having to do the inspection and maintenance in a week (since I am selling the condo) and having to find an outdated fireplace parts. From the first day, Tiffany from Chimney.com worked so hard to make sure that inspection is done in a couple of days. Once I was convinced that I need a new fireplace, Tiffany and Jimmy spent literally hours to find a compatible fireplace to existing outdated one. At every discussion with Tiffany, I felt I am dealing with a friend and outstanding professional expert and they sure made me feel like I am their only clients when I knew for sure that their are so busy with other clients. I really felt they work on a 24 hour schedule. Although they knew that I am under time constraints, they still offered a very competitive price when I asked them to replace my existing fireplace. Installation only took few hours with outstanding results. Our neighbors still can't believe the entire inspection and replacement took 4 days from start to finish. It was my pleasure sharing Chimney.com's contact information with my neighbors. Thank you so much Tiffany, Jimmy and all the Chimney.com staff. You sure know how to keep your clients smiling and relaxed throughout their challenging and stressful maintenance time. You are simply amazing."

"The owner of Stone Depot, Nick Papas, offers hands on professional service.   I am a realtor, so great service is part of my professional standard and I appreciate it in others.  Nick was always available by phone and was very responsive.  I was nervous about selecting my granite, and I changed my mind at the last minute.   Nick was very gracious and allowed me to select another granite that I preferred. His team arrived for the installation on time and did an outstanding job.  The was a minor issue with caulking, and Nick sent someone out the next day to finish it off.  I could not be more happy with my granite and Stone Depot.  I was advised to personally select my slab of granite - which I did.  All granite is different, so that was good advice.  The location for selection was in Sterling VA, which was great for me since I live in VA.
I also checked out Counter Intelligence, but found the salesman was not very concerned and did not go the extra mile to get my business.  I  had to drive all the way to Silver Spring MD to look at samples of granite slabs.  That was to far to go.  Also, their price quote was higher.  The smaller company atmosphere at Stone Depot was a much better choice for me.  I highly recommend them!

"when I originally contacted company I dealt with Bruno and he was very helpful and assured me they could fix the problem I had with my undermount sink pulling away from the granite as it had been installed improperly by the company who originally did the work.
I originally schedule the appointment easily but had to cancel due to medical emergency. I rescheduled and was told the time of arrival would be between 9-11am, which was fine as I had an appointment in the afternoon. However, the day before we were called and said the appointment would not be until 11-2, this was not satisfactory and we explained this. We were then told they would arrive between 11:30 and 12 noon, calling 1/2 hour prior..
The day of the appointment the repairmen had not arrived or called, so I spoke with the receptionist and was told my appointment was between and 11 and 2pm. Again I explained this would not work and went over the conversation of the prio dayr. I then spoke with Charles the floor supervisor, he did assist, called the repair crew and told me a time of arrival, which was accurate.
Later on Charles called back to be sure the repairmen had arrived, and explained what had happened with the appointment. I appreciated his follow-up which restored my faith in the company. I made some suggestions as to how this could be avoided in the future, and Charles is going to follow up.
If this repair works I will be very pleased and would recommend this company again

"We had been told by a home inspector and another chimney sweep/repair company that we needed to replace our damper with a new lock-top damper requiring an adapter - a costly repair on our budget.   Prior to committing to the repair, we called A&T to come out and give us a second opinion.  Dennis from A&T evaluated our chimney and determined that the damper was basically fine but just a little rusty.   They applied some oil to the damper so it would move more freely and that was that.
Not only did they save us hundreds of dollars on a repair we didn't need, they charged $0 for the visit and the (admittedly minor) work.  Dennis also pointed out another important repair that was needed - the heat reflecting panels that line the inside of the fireplace were cracked, which is a potential fire hazard.  This hadn't even been mentioned by the home inspector or the other chimney company.
So although I can't judge the quality of their work beyond applying a bit of oil, I can attest to their courtesy, integrity and professionalism and say that  from now on, I will call them first for all of my chimney needs.

"They advertise European craftsmanship and they mean it. The workmanship is exquisite! If you are willing to take the time to visit their suppliers is a memorable experience. There you can see a wharehouse full of the most beautiful granite and marble specimines that you have ever seen. It is facinating to see the incredible stones that are mined worldwide. Even if you are not interested in purchasing marble or granite, the trip is a museum like experience that is worth the time. As for the price, it was the lowest of all the contractors that I talked to. What more could you ask for?"

"F Stone Design - Fernando has successfully completed two jobs for me. One in stone (wall) and the other in brick (Front entrance repair). Both jobs were extremely well done. Not only was the final product first rate, the work was completed on time with minimal disruption. Cleanup was meticulous. Overall a great job and customer experience."

FAQs for brick or stone fireplace repair projects in Washington, DC

Permit requirements for fireplace insert removal vary by location and project scope. While removing an electric insert rarely requires permits, gas insert removals often do because they involve modifications to gas lines. Some municipalities also require permits for changes to structural elements or venting systems. Check with your local building department before beginning your project. Professional fireplace services typically handle permit acquisition as part of their package.

Removing a fireplace insert can potentially impact your home's value. Since fireplaces are desirable features in many housing markets, removing an insert (especially if it eliminates the fireplace's functionality) might negatively affect your property value. If you're planning to sell your home soon, consider keeping the fireplace intact. For homeowners planning to stay long-term, the potential energy efficiency gains from removing an inefficient fireplace might outweigh future resale considerations.

The time required to remove a fireplace insert depends on several factors, including the type of insert, its installation complexity, and whether structural modifications are needed. Professional removal services can typically complete the job in a single day, though complex situations involving gas lines, electrical work, or structural changes may require additional time. Your removal specialist should provide a time estimate based on your specific situation.

Many fireplace inserts contain recyclable materials, particularly metal components that can be processed at scrap facilities. Working inserts in good condition, especially wood-burning models, might have resale value. Before disposal, consider checking with recycling centers, architectural salvage shops, or online marketplaces to explore options for giving your old insert a second life. This approach can be both environmentally responsible and potentially offset some of your removal costs.
