"Jim provided some re-pointing on my parents red brick house. He was extremely patient, worked within their schedule, cleaned up after himself, and did an amazing job from start to finish. Our next door neighbors liked his work so much while he was doing our house, that they hired him to help re-point their house as well. Most everything he repaired blended seamlessly to original house. Jim was laid back and no hassle to work with and I would highly recommend his company to anyone."

"Highly recommended, timely and very professional. Carl was very knowledgeable and easy to work with. He was able to answer all of our questions and walk us through different options, while being mindful of our budget. Just to highlight what all he did to repair our chimney. A safe working platform was erected. The old cap was removed and the brick was demoed to the flashing. All the brick was cleaned and relayed in tinted mortar to match existing masonry. A new crown was installed with custom stainless steal cage. The chimney was washed cleaned and sealed all debris were cleaned up and scaffolding was removed. We were so happy with the results. We would absolute hire him again."

"Dorin and company were prompt and professional and did a beautiful job on the new brick masonry construction (and also pressure washing driveway retaining wall). The brick mason worked closely with me throughout the process with each step (no pun intended) and offered/explained a variety of construction and aesthetic/design options. The crew went above and beyond in addressing/fulfilling some unanticipated additional work, backfilling the area, cleanup etc., and collaborated and communicated all along the way. Highly recommended company."

"Dennis and his crew (Rege, Bill and Bill) were great. They arrived on Saturday and started the replacement of the six lintels (garage and windows). They ran into a problem with the bricks for the garage because some of them had several cracks in them and could not be reused. They were able to solve the problem by removing some bricks from my chimney. They also started work on the upper two bedroom window lintels. They had to come back Sunday to finish working on the replacement lintels on the second floor and front window and door and back bedroom window. There is a lot of work replacing lintels and I appreciate the fantastic job that they did. They also went around the house and sealed any cracks that were showing around the foundation of the house. The owner, Dennis, kept me apprised of what was happening both days. They cleaned up after they were finished. I will definitely hire them again if I need any additional chimney/masonry work."
This chimney was done from the roof up as contracted. Some of the mortar joints are still wet which you can see by the darker spots.
This is the 2nd chimney which we were only con
tracted to spot point any cracks or holes. After talking to my foreman, we decided it was best for us to point the whole chimney from the roof to the top and not charge the customer any additional money!!!
This is another view of the same chimney in the prior picture. All 4 sides were pointed.
Another view of the 2nd chimney showing we pointed the all 4 sides!!!

"They left us with many repairs and had to hire another company to clean up. The communication was poor and they just showed up without notice to start the project early. They came out for tuck pointing and did not tarp anything so we have mortar spots on the driveway, all over the yard, on the back deck and on the downspouts. We hired another company to clean it up because we did not want them back on the property."

"I bought the roof maintenance deal on Angies list and will definitely do it again. My house is small so Zach did not even charge me the full price...I did not even ask him to discount it. I am very happy with his service and even more happy that I found an honest, capable company for all my future roofing needs. I would definitely recommend calling them for all your roofing needs."

"Our old house on the Northside of Pittsburgh was in need of an exterior facelift and a new front porch to replace the one that had collapsed. I met with Dave LaBovick of Exceptional Exteriors and we agreed upon a price, which my wife and I found quite reasonable. The work on the vinyl siding began about a week later and took only a half a day to wrap up. The job was done to our complete satisfaction, The before and after is like night and day. Another crew arrived a few days later to do the porch and sidewalk. They began work on a Thursday afternoon and were finished 24 hours later. Once again, we are very happy with the result. In both cases, they removed all debris and left-over building materials associated with the job. We are not only completely satisfied with the work that Exceptional Exteriors did for us, we are looking forward to hiring them again for our next home project."

"

Our experience with Rick Horn Construction was all positive, although the project took longer than initially planned, partly because we added two small side jobs to the initial contract. Rick's crew, led by Keith, were professional, punctual, friendly and tidy. They were very good at matching the new construction style to the existing style of the house. Sub-contractors were used for electric, plumbing, painting, carpet, ceramic tile, and brick masonry, and all were excellent. Removing the front wall of our house was a real engineering feat, and a professional engineer was used to design the flitch beam which the construction crew installed. A second, smaller flitch beam was installed above the outer porch wall, since one of the existing porch columns was removed to allow for the addition of windows along the entire front wall. The crew installed a total of 7 new double-hung windows, 4 decorative windows, inner and outer entry doors, and re-made the mantel over the fireplace, which had to be removed as part of the demolition of two existing built-in bookshelves. The finished result is outstanding, and looks like it was the original house instead of a new build, as we were able to save the original bricks and use them for closing in the front porch. We felt the price was reasonable, and we are delighted with the overall finished product.

"We contacted Home Crafters and Chris came out to give us an estimate on November 24th, which was the week of Thanksgiving.  He promised us a contract and breakdown of costs by the following Monday by email.  After reviewing and signing we agreed to have Home Crafters do the work and he said it would be at least two weeks for them to start the work as long as it was not raining.  Much to our surprise, two roofers were sent to our home on that Thursday and they completed the work by Friday afternoon.  Everything went extremely well and we would definitely contact them in the future if needed.  (One thing to note is that we have seen the repairs via pictures but are unsure of whether or not it will leak since we haven't had rain.)

FAQs for brick or stone fireplace repair projects in Pittsburgh, PA

Tuckpointing an 8-by-8-foot brick wall section costs between $300 and $1,600, with variations based on mortar condition and accessibility. Walls with intricate brickwork patterns or severely deteriorated mortar tend toward the higher end of this range. Ground-level walls with minimal damage cost less than elevated surfaces or those requiring extensive preparation.

The cost reflects the labor-intensive nature of properly removing damaged mortar without harming surrounding bricks, plus the skilled craftsmanship needed to apply new material correctly. Professional tuckpointing requires specialized tools, material knowledge, and precise application techniques. The investment provides significant value by preventing water damage that could lead to extensive structural repairs costing many times more than preventative maintenance.

To estimate tuckpointing expenses, multiply the area's square footage by the appropriate rate ($5 to $25 per square foot) based on project complexity. Add adjustments for factors like height requirements, accessibility challenges, or specialized materials. For chimney work or other difficult-to-access areas, expect rates toward the upper end of the range. Professional assessments provide the most accurate projections for your specific situation.

While technically possible for small areas, DIY tuckpointing presents significant challenges, including proper mortar removal without brick damage, achieving a consistent joint appearance, and ensuring structural integrity. The process requires specialized tools and materials along with physical dexterity. Professional masons bring experience in identifying underlying issues that might not be apparent to untrained observers. Complex or structurally significant areas should always be entrusted to qualified professionals.

The frequency of tuckpointing depends on environmental exposure, original masonry installation quality, and local climate conditions. Regular inspections, particularly of chimneys and weather-exposed walls, help identify deterioration before it becomes severe. Addressing small areas of deterioration promptly can extend the life of the overall masonry system and prevent more extensive repairs in the future.

While both processes replace deteriorated mortar, tuckpointing involves additional aesthetic enhancement. Repointing simply restores structural integrity by replacing damaged mortar with new material. Tuckpointing adds a decorative element by creating contrasting lines that give the appearance of precision joints. This additional craftsmanship explains why repointing costs $3 to $15 per square foot while tuckpointing ranges from $5 to $25 per square foot.
