"Matt and Brett are amazing to work with. They definitely know their stuff. I had some items that needed to be repaired for a home sale per the home inspection. I really appreciated that everything was explained to me, including pictures of all affected areas. Other companies just wanted to replace the whole fireplace which would have cost 6,000 dollars. Matt came up with a plan of what needed to be replaced and what could be repaired or resurfaced. Brett did the dryer vent cleaning and I went from taking 2 hours to dry clothes to 30 minutes. Amazing customer service. Extremely prompt too with appointments and responding to messages. I have already hired them again for my new house."

"The brick foundation had settled at a corner of my house causing mortar to break and a few bricks were broken.  The crack was about 3/4 inch wide.  Five holes were dug about 2 feet deep and jacks were installed to jack the brick siding back  in place.  Once the brick siding was in place cement was injected to hold the brick in place.  The broken bricks were replaced. The lintel over the garage door, door and window were replaced.  The mortar that was damaged on the house was removed and re-pointed.  The Hipp Masonry crew were polite.  They did excellent work.  The crew cleaned up at the end of each day and after the job was completed.

"This actually covers two separate visits they were only a few days apart. I contacted Precision about doing a sweep and inspection. I had a 30% off coupon from Angie's List. While talking with their scheduler I mentioned the coupon and she pointed out that there current special would cost less. The techs came out and performed admirably, quick, thorough and clean all told less then 20 minutes. They showed me were some cracks in the mortar around the chimney cap were allowing water into the fireplace. I called to schedule the repair and then used the 30% off coupon. The techs came and fixed the mortar in about 1/2 an hour. I really like these guys.

"The initial meeting went fine, the man who came out seemed very knowledgeable.  Once they began the work, they finished in a timely manner, although I did notice they hit concrete in one of the locations they were trying to dig.  When I came home after they were done (I had left the final check with my daughter to take care of - mistake), I noticed the 'repairs' to the bricks were extremely sloppy:  completely different color mortar, etc.  There was a lot going on at the moment so I did not contact them right away, and then I procrastinated further since some time had already gone by and this was cosmetic, but when I finally did contact them, I was told their brick person had been fired and they would fix the problem, and he would call back the next day.  He did not call, so I sent pictures a few days later and my husband called a month or two later, but they never contacted us.  Later I found out that they had not submitted the final inspection report to the county by the deadline so things could be properly closed out, but since I did have a copy, I was able to send that in.  By the way, the 'inspection' was based on a review of the 'drive logs.'  Now I have had additional cracks/sticking doors inside and I think there may be a new crack outside (I have not compared yet with my pictures taken earlier to verify it is new.)  I have not yet contacted them about this problem to see if they will respond.

"Had my garage converted into a den years ago. Flooring needed replaced. Dave ripped up the rug and put 3/4" plywood over the old floor and laid laminate flooring on top of that. Repair area around the stairs to make it more presentable. Moved some of the larger items in the room in order to do the job. Reconnected my computer after job was completed. Painted the ceiling. Also repaired two cracks in the living room ceiling. All together, there were four men on the job. All were courteous and eager to answer questions. Very pleased with a job well done. Cleaned up well."

FAQs for brick or stone fireplace repair projects in Norfolk, VA

Permit requirements for fireplace insert removal vary by location and project scope. While removing an electric insert rarely requires permits, gas insert removals often do because they involve modifications to gas lines. Some municipalities also require permits for changes to structural elements or venting systems. Check with your local building department before beginning your project. Professional fireplace services typically handle permit acquisition as part of their package.

Removing a fireplace insert can potentially impact your home's value. Since fireplaces are desirable features in many housing markets, removing an insert (especially if it eliminates the fireplace's functionality) might negatively affect your property value. If you're planning to sell your home soon, consider keeping the fireplace intact. For homeowners planning to stay long-term, the potential energy efficiency gains from removing an inefficient fireplace might outweigh future resale considerations.

The time required to remove a fireplace insert depends on several factors, including the type of insert, its installation complexity, and whether structural modifications are needed. Professional removal services can typically complete the job in a single day, though complex situations involving gas lines, electrical work, or structural changes may require additional time. Your removal specialist should provide a time estimate based on your specific situation.

Many fireplace inserts contain recyclable materials, particularly metal components that can be processed at scrap facilities. Working inserts in good condition, especially wood-burning models, might have resale value. Before disposal, consider checking with recycling centers, architectural salvage shops, or online marketplaces to explore options for giving your old insert a second life. This approach can be both environmentally responsible and potentially offset some of your removal costs.
