"Home Service Experts matched a $50 offer from a competitor when we called them before the job began. They arrived late but called us to explain their circumstances at least three times in advance of their arrival. They had been on another job which ran late because that homeowner had no heat and Home Service Experts wouldn't leave them without heating. Upon their arrival, they inspected our fireplace and immediately explained that there was no need to clean it. They showed me that the chimney was completely void of creosote by looking up into it with a light. When inspecting the fireplace, we told them that water had been accumulating in it. Home Service Experts thoroughly examined the fireplace looking for the source of the leak including getting a ladder and climbing onto the roof. They examined the flashing at the base of the chimney, noted it was not sealed, and went into detail as to how I could test for a water leak and repair it myself or contact someone who does flashing. They also explained and showed me that inside the chimney, one wall of the flue was not concreted (evidently, it should have been) but the owner didn't think that was the root cause of the leak. Overall, they spent considerable time and offered clear and thorough explanations to me, all at no charge. The owner seemed like a very knowledgeable and likeable guy who was really trying to be helpful. Seemed like an old school, blue collar type which I truly appreciated. Would call them again or recommend them without reservation."

"Excellent service. Vinny is very honest and knowledgeable about his industry. He spent time to explain every detail about what he was working on and made sure I clearly understood what needed repair and why. He was very thorough and went above and beyond to make sure everything was done correctly. I would highly recommend Safety First for any chimney/fireplace/masonry repair or restoration project you may have. They provide high quality work with great service at a very fair price."

"We have an old table that needed a replacement marble top. The top table is about 27 by 18 inches. The back and sides are straight, and the front is curved out. We found many reviews of providers of counter tops, but nothing for antique restoration. We needed a small 3/4 inch piece of marble.
We visited several marble shops in the area and found that 3/4 inch was harder to find that 1.5 inch. We found that All Granite and Marble was the class act in local suppliers, and decided to use them. We visited their showroom, and were shown several marble slabs from which to choose. They were patient, and spent much time with us as we looked at the slabs. We finally picked out a small slab, and they spent more time with us as we moved our template around on the slab to find a pretty pattern. Then they called in another expert to make sure that the place we picked did not have a fault that would make the top fragile. As a result we moved the pattern a bit more. When we finalized a place, they taped the pattern to the piece. The new top was ready on time, and we picked it up.
I can understand spending time with a customer when they order $5000 worth of counter top, but I was amazed at the time they spent with us just to get a $326 top. This is a class operation.

"As part of the big deal, they came out and swept the chimney and recommended a few minor repairs. I wasn't home when it was completed, but since I didn't have any chimney fires last winter, they did what they needed to!

"The crew arrived on time and did a thorough job. The reason this rating isn't higher is because the crew chief had been in my house no more than 10 minutes before diagnosing what he said was a dangerous level of creosote in our chimney and recommending installation of a $1,000+ chimney liner, which his company would of course be happy to sell us. I said no, thanks. The next year I hired another service - Emener ([*** Link removed ***] - which told me that the chimney was actually in good shape and pretty clean considering how much we use the fireplace. 5 Star clearly used its promotional offer as a way to upsell an expensive add-on that I am now convinced wasn't needed. Beware of deals that look too good to be true."

FAQs for brick or stone fireplace repair projects in Stanhope, NJ

Tuckpointing an 8-by-8-foot brick wall section costs between $300 and $1,600, with variations based on mortar condition and accessibility. Walls with intricate brickwork patterns or severely deteriorated mortar tend toward the higher end of this range. Ground-level walls with minimal damage cost less than elevated surfaces or those requiring extensive preparation.

The cost reflects the labor-intensive nature of properly removing damaged mortar without harming surrounding bricks, plus the skilled craftsmanship needed to apply new material correctly. Professional tuckpointing requires specialized tools, material knowledge, and precise application techniques. The investment provides significant value by preventing water damage that could lead to extensive structural repairs costing many times more than preventative maintenance.

To estimate tuckpointing expenses, multiply the area's square footage by the appropriate rate ($5 to $25 per square foot) based on project complexity. Add adjustments for factors like height requirements, accessibility challenges, or specialized materials. For chimney work or other difficult-to-access areas, expect rates toward the upper end of the range. Professional assessments provide the most accurate projections for your specific situation.

While technically possible for small areas, DIY tuckpointing presents significant challenges, including proper mortar removal without brick damage, achieving a consistent joint appearance, and ensuring structural integrity. The process requires specialized tools and materials along with physical dexterity. Professional masons bring experience in identifying underlying issues that might not be apparent to untrained observers. Complex or structurally significant areas should always be entrusted to qualified professionals.

The frequency of tuckpointing depends on environmental exposure, original masonry installation quality, and local climate conditions. Regular inspections, particularly of chimneys and weather-exposed walls, help identify deterioration before it becomes severe. Addressing small areas of deterioration promptly can extend the life of the overall masonry system and prevent more extensive repairs in the future.

While both processes replace deteriorated mortar, tuckpointing involves additional aesthetic enhancement. Repointing simply restores structural integrity by replacing damaged mortar with new material. Tuckpointing adds a decorative element by creating contrasting lines that give the appearance of precision joints. This additional craftsmanship explains why repointing costs $3 to $15 per square foot while tuckpointing ranges from $5 to $25 per square foot.
