Comment: I’ve been living at my apartment since the 1st of march.I live at the basement of a 3 story house that rents each room separately. Recently, me and my 2 other roommates have been experiencing very bad living conditions. We pay $1400 for a 3b 1 bath. Our ceiling comes apart in the kitchen, we have no trash, washer or dryer , no garbage disposal, no dish washer no nothing . We moved in here in kind of a rush so we didn’t care much if these things until it became a problem. On Sunday , our entire downstairs got flooded and my roommates room got hit the worst , her bed, clothes and carpet is drenched in water while the whole living room is also drenched . One corner of my room also got water on it.
The whole Downstairs and my roommate room stinks so bad due to the wet carpet that we can’t even sleep there anymore. Our fury & carpet is getting moldy due to such humidity.
I have addressed all of this us more issues to our landlord and asked if it was possible to sublease. The landlord says we can’t sublease our apartment with the new lease we got in. They also came in today for the first time since Sunday to check in the flood. They claim they ”don’t know” how this happened or how water got through since there’s no water marks going down our walls. They’re trying to blame us for leaving our windows open which is untrue. We NEVER open our room windows since we’re living in a basement. She also wants to say we need a window air conditioner in there & that’s the reason our furtniture & carpet are getting moldy. We have an air conditioner that keeps the apartment cooled so I doubt the problem is the air conditioner. Not to mention, we don’t have access to a thermostat because the entire house shares only 1.
Am I able to break my lease if I have good reasons to?
What can I do about this and go on about moving out? I definitely don’t want to stay here any longer as our landlord doesn’t communicate with us and when she decides to ,it’ll be DAYS later
