Bottom line: I was very satisfied with the services that Mr. Malmquist provided. Will definitely call him again if I need a structural engineer, and will recommend him to friends or family.

I am buying a 1998-built home. During the home inspection, my inspector noted a possible structural anomaly in the basement. I was present for the inspection, and we discussed his finding - it didn't appear to be a big deal to me, but I'm not an engineer. Having dealt with pre-existing structural issues in a previous home, I know that is something I never, ever want to do again. So I started looking for professional help.

My realtor didn't have a recommendation handy, but Angie's List had reviews for several structural engineers for the area. I wanted somebody that would give me an objective view of the situation, offer a recommendation and potential solutions, but would not be swayed by the possibility of follow-on services (i.e. I did not want somebody to come out and offer me additional services that THEY could provide!). Peter Malmquist (Structural Solutions, Inc.) really seemed to fit the bill. His only disadvantage was the fact that he wasn't exactly local; it's a bit of a drive for him to get to the property. My realtor came up with a local recommendation at about the same time, but I liked what I was reading on Angie's List and stuck with Structural Solutions, Inc.

We met at the property and Peter dove right in. He was very thorough; measuring this, taking pictures of that, and checking the level of just about everything! He gave me a detailed description of how things should be, and compared that to what he observed at the property so that I could understand the difference between the "as-is" and "should-be" cases. Even better, he described everything in layman's terms so that I could understand it all.

Once he wrapped up the inspection and had everything he needed to complete his analysis he provided me with a well-documented report that I'll use in the future to show that we exercised due diligence on the matter. Fortunately, he did not find a structural problem with the property, but much more important to me is the fact that I know that everything is good now and won't have to stress about it in the future (trust me, it's no fun if you do!).
